CNA underwriting profits 22% lower in Q1 on $125mn in cats

Core income at CNA more than doubled in the first quarter as net investment income surged, but underwriting profits fell by more than 20% as catastrophe losses came in higher and underlying margins slightly improved.

The Chicago-based carrier reported $0.96 in core earnings per share early Monday morning, well ahead of last year’s $0.40
