Many observers seemed to believe as soon as Chubb's interest in The Hartford became public that there was an air of inevitability around the consummation of a deal.

I was somewhat more skeptical, stressing in late March that any of three possible paths forward for Chubb could end in failure "if the right mix of Chubb discipline on price, Hartford reluctance to sell and investor lassitude combine"....
