CNA posts $113mn Q2 underwriting gain as cat losses, expenses fall

CNA returned to a second quarter P&C underwriting profit, delivering a $113mn underwriting gain driven by a fall in catastrophe losses and lower expenses, and despite a small tightening in underlying margins.

The Chicago-based underwriter reported $351mn in core P&C income Monday morning, sharply higher than the $125mn core profit from a year ago.
