American Financial Group’s (AFG) specialty P&C underwriting profit tripled in the second quarter to $154mn, driven by strong results in the carrier’s casualty business, lower cat losses and the absence of Covid-19 claims.

Operating earnings per share jumped to $2.39 in the quarter, from $0.67 in Q2 last year, in line with analyst estimates.
