Medical professional liability insurer ProAssurance swung to an operating profit in the second quarter as it recorded a narrower underwriting loss and got a boost from its recent acquisition of medical professional liability Norcal.

The Birmingham, Alabama-based company posted an operating profit of $25.6mn, or $0.49 per share, reversing a year-ago loss of $32.4mn,
