Chicago-based specialty carrier Kemper was decimated in the fourth quarter by a spike in claims severity that pushed the carrier to a $257mn underwriting loss, its third major negative underwriting result in as many quarters.
On Monday evening the insurer said it lost $2.05 operating income per share, a sharp swing from last year’s $1.59
