AM Best goes negative on Kemper’s ‘A’ FSR after earnings deterioration

Ratings agency AM Best has revised its outlook for Kemper Corp’s financial strength rating to ‘negative’ from ‘stable’, citing “significant earnings deterioration” as a motivating factor, and expressing concern that continued earnings weakness could lead to further capital erosion.

The ratings agency said it currently categorizes Kemper’s balance sheet strength as “ very strong”, while viewing Kemper’s operating performance as “adequate”, business profile “neutral” and enterprise risk management practices “appropriate”.
