NHTSA reports 10.5% increase in fatalities from motor vehicle crashes in 2021

Amidst a backdrop of increasing severity in the personal auto segment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released early estimates that 42,915 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes last year, a 10.5% increase from the 38,824 fatalities in 2020.

NHTSA reported that fatalities in multi-vehicle crashes increased 16% in 2021, while those on urban roads increased 16%, those among drivers 65 and older increased 14% and pedestrian fatalities increased 13%.
