WR Berkley’s (WRB) combined ratio improved by just over one point in the second quarter, while the company posted a record amount of premium amid expansion in most of its business lines – particularly in the excess and surplus and specialty markets.

Gross written premium leaped almost 15% to top $3bn for the first time, as WRB recorded gains in both its insurance and reinsurance businesses.
