AM Best has downgraded the financial strength rating (FSR) of Kemper’s property and casualty subsidiaries to A- from A citing “prolonged earnings deterioration” and a challenging economic and regulatory environment.

The ratings agency noted that Kemper’s P&C units have reported unfavorable underwriting performance over the last 18 months, as the personal lines carrier grapples with elevated inflation and supply chain issues in the auto sector.
