A state of emergency has been declared in New Zealand as the country suffers from the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle, which its prime minister has described as the “most significant weather event” to hit the country this century.

It is only the third occasion that a state of emergency has been declared in the country, as residents scramble to escape from flooded homes and 225,000 people were left without power.
