AM Best downgrades issuer credit rating of Mercury General and subsidiaries

AM Best has downgraded Mercury General Corporation’s long-term issuer credit ratings to BBB from BBB+ and downgraded several core subsidiaries of Mercury General to A from A+.

It said the downgrades were due to significant earnings deterioration in 2022, driven by “unfavorable operating performance” resulting from increased claim frequency and severity caused by inflationary trends, as well as declining investment performance driven by investment market volatility.
