Cat losses dominate early Q2 reporting, with reinsurance, convective storms and rates in focus

Second-quarter earnings started off with a bang – or more appropriately given hail’s big impact this period – a dull thud, when it came to catastrophe losses.

Thursday morning, commercial lines bellwether Travelers reported a $1.5bn cat hit, as personal lines insurer Allstate reported $1bn in June losses and regional carrier The Hanover warned of a $262mn Q2 cat impact.
