Tracking slightly west of earlier estimates, Idalia – now a Category 2 hurricane – is expected to reach Category 3 status by tonight, before it reaches the Big Bend on Wednesday morning.

This would make it only the second major hurricane to hit the region since 1896, according to broker BMS, and insured losses could end up in the $3bn-$6bn range.
