Litigation funding, severity increases drove reserve charge: Axis

For full-year 2023, Axis Capital Holdings’ net reserve strengthening was $412mn pre-tax, of which $236mn was attributed to the reinsurance segment and $176mn to insurance.

More than 100% of the reserve charge was due to pre-pandemic years, as the slight release of $40mn that offset the full-year increase of $452mn was from the 2020 to 2022 accident years.
